John was brilliant, sarcastic, kind,
quirky, enthusiastic, puzzled, funny, angry, and beautiful.
He always seemed to be juggling many balls at once. Yet, the
juggle had a pattern: better to understand and act in the
world so as to be able to make a difference in his beloved
country. I trust that other students will, as John Kuhn fellows,
uphold his spirit of intellectual rigor, curiosity and integrity.

classmate and fellow Rhodes Scholar
John recognized
that his education was a privilege though he wished that it
wasn't; for if the new South Africa was to emerge in force
he felt it would have to do better in educating young leaders
representing every shade of the rainbow nation. This is why
the work of the John Kuhn Fellowship & Trust is crucial.

Wits student leader and Rhodes Scholar
To John education
stretched beyond narrow academic learning; he believed one
should be educated about the world in the broadest sense.
John involved himself in the broader community, engaged in
public debates about the country and university he believed
in and the processes he thought would make them flourish.
He was never afraid to speak up. |
